Description
Letrozole 2.5mg Tablets is an oral aromatase inhibitor used in the treatment of hormone receptor-positive breast cancer, primarily in postmenopausal women. It helps reduce estrogen production in the body, thereby slowing or stopping the growth of estrogen-dependent cancer cells.
Letrozole is also used off-label as a fertility aid to induce ovulation in women who have ovulatory dysfunction, including those with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
Uses of Letrozole 2.5mg Tablets
Treatment of hormone receptor-positive breast cancer in postmenopausal women
Adjuvant therapy after surgery or chemotherapy to prevent recurrence
Management of advanced or metastatic breast cancer
Ovulation induction in women with PCOS or unexplained infertility (off-label)
Benefits
Effectively lowers estrogen levels, controlling hormone-dependent tumor growth
Reduces the risk of cancer recurrence after treatment
Enhances ovulation response in women with PCOS
Non-steroidal and generally well-tolerated
Suitable for long-term management under medical supervision
Mechanism of Action
Letrozole works by inhibiting the aromatase enzyme, which is responsible for converting androgens (such as testosterone) into estrogens in peripheral tissues.
By blocking this conversion, Letrozole reduces circulating estrogen levels, depriving estrogen-dependent cancer cells of the hormones they need to grow and multiply.
In fertility therapy, the temporary reduction in estrogen levels stimulates the pituitary gland to release more follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), promoting follicular development and ovulation.
